Q Every time we run the split air-conditioners in our bedroom, the room starts smelling bad after a while. We showed it to the vendor who cleaned the filters and then replaced them after a lot of persuasion from us. We even got the AC unit opened and cleaned. We didn’t find anything rotting. We have an open rainwater drain next to the building, but being on the fifth floor, I don’t think that would have such a huge impact. Even so, why does it stink only when the AC is operational? Why don’t other air-conditioned rooms not emit the same smell? Please help.

Q In our building, the common wall between the two apartments is so thin that we can hear our neighbour’s TV. In which case, I am sure they can overhear our conversations as well. Can you suggest methods to stop this? We can even hear the child of our neighbour above, bouncing the ball on their floor or a chair being dragged. What can we do?

Q I would like to paint my 1,025 sq ft two-bedroom flat. My flat has good lighting all through the day. It has a false gypsum board ceiling and marble flooring. Right now, I don’t have any furniture. The painted doors are flush. Windows with glass panes are also painted. The colours I have in mind are listed below. Would appreciate your suggestions on the best choices.
1. All the rooms except bathrooms
All walls: Asian paints royal luxury emulsion. Code 8002 — Bashful Beige
All ceilings: Code L 105 — Crystal Peak/Code 0765 — Morning Glory
2. All doors and windows: Enamel
Code: 0951 — Coral Shell/Code 3229 — Vanilla Cream
3. For bathrooms (I have blue and white tiles)
Walls and ceilings: Code 7810 — Dry Moss/Code 7730 — Green Tomato
4. Could you also suggest what colour ‘Decolam’ I should use for my cupboards to match the selected colours?

Q Having known you from our teaching days at SPA (Delhi) and seeing you answer numerous tricky questions, I thought I could quiz you with a ticklish problem I have at hand. Recently, I handpicked some Jaisalmer stone for a close friend/customer of mine, from a vendor who said it was from the same block of stone. Despite some of my best efforts and intentions the flooring looks odd post-polishing, for each stone has a slightly different shade. I don’t like to tell any one “take it or… this is like this only”. I don’t have the time to redo the flooring but I still want to do a good job. Is there anything I can do with this floor?
